UP member killed by mob beating in N’ganj

Sohel Ahmed a union parishad (UP) member was killed in a mob beating on Monday morning (29 September) in Narayanganj’s Araihazar upazila on Monday.

The incident took place around 8 AM at Baliapara Bazar under Brahmmandi union of Araihazar upazila.

The dead Sohel Ahmed, 32, son of Mokbul from Baliapara village, was the member of ward no. 3 of Brahmmandi Union. He was reportedly involved in Awami League politics.


Locals alleged that during the previous Awami League regime, Sohel reportedly established a reign of terror in the area under the political patronage of UP Chairman Lak Mia. Following the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, 2024, Sohel went into hiding. However, he recently returned to the area and allegedly resumed extortion activities.

On Monday morning, Sohel reportedly went to demand extortion money from the house of a local resident named Sharif in Baliapara. The family, with the help of locals, detained him and alerted the villagers. His three accomplices reportedly managed to flee the scene. Angry villagers then gathered and beat Sohel severely, leaving him critically injured. He died on the spot before police arrived.

Araihazar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khondokar Nasir Uddin said, “We received information about a man being beaten to death in a mob attack this morning. Police recovered the body from the spot and brought it to the station. He had 10 to 12 criminal cases filed against him. The body will be sent to the morgue shortly.”
