Sacked deputy attorney general Imran Ahmed Bhuiyan, who along with his family went to the US embassy in Dhaka this afternoon to “seek shelter”, is returning home after three and a half hours.
“I along with my wife and three daughters are going back to my residence with police support. We stayed on the US embassy office premises from 3:30pm to 7:00pm,” he told the journalists at 8:23pm.
“Higher authorities from the government have given me assurance, and said there is nothing to fear. I did not go there for a visa. I went to the embassy after receiving threats,” he added.
Earlier, he informed The Daily Star through a text message of his stay at the embassy.
“I am at the American embassy, along with my whole family, for shelter. There are police personnel outside. I was sacked today … Over the last four-five days, I was being threatened on my Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp. This government repays love with imprisonment. I don’t have a US visa; I somehow managed to leave home with just three bags and my three daughters, and am sitting here. Pray for us,” read the text message.
Contacted, US Embassy Spokesperson Bryan Schiller told journalists, “At this time, we have no information to offer.”
On September 4, DAG Imran told reporters that he had refused to sign the statement that the attorney general’s office was preparing in protest of the recent letter from global figures about the trial proceedings of Nobel Laureate Prof Yunus.
The following day, Law Minister Anisul Huq said Imran had breached discipline by making the statement.
On the same day, the attorney general’s office issued a notification asking all its law officers to get permission from the AG before making any statement to the media.
Earlier today, while answering reporters’ questions at the Akhaura Junction Railway Station in Brahmanbaria, the law minister said Imran Ahmed Bhuiyan has been dismissed from his post.
