Authorities in Jhenidah exhumed the bodies of four individuals on Tuesday for autopsy, following allegations that they died after consuming toxic spirit.
The exhumation, carried out between 8:30 pm and 12:30 pm under the supervision of Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate Nurul Huda Monir, comes days after the victims died while undergoing treatment.
The dead were identified as Laltu Hossain of Pirojkhali village, Selim, 45, of Khejura village, Kheder Ali, 50, of Nafarkandi village, and Shahidul Molla of Shankarchandra village.
According to police, on October 9, six individuals consumed liquor at Dingedah Bazar and later fell ill. All six reportedly died on October 12 while receiving medical treatment.
While autopsies were performed on two of the victims, the families of the other four had buried them without post-mortem examinations. However, following a case filed by Rakib, brother of the deceased Laltu Hossain, police sought a court order to exhume the remaining bodies for autopsy.
Inspector (Operation) Hossain Ali said the bodies have been sent to Sadar Hospital morgue and that further legal action will follow based on the autopsy results.
Police suspect that the deaths may have been caused by consumption of toxic spirit, possibly methanol-based, often used in homeopathic treatments. Two individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident, and 117 bottles of spirit were recovered during a raid in Jhenidah.
