Four life-term and 5 sentenced to death in Cox’s Bazar murder case

A Cox’s Bazar court on Tuesday sentenced five individuals to death and four others to life imprisonment for the abduction and murder of two minor siblings in 2016.

Judge Abdul Goni of the Cox’s Bazar Woman and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal (Court No. 2) delivered the verdict.

The five who received the death penalty are Mohammad Jahangir Alam, Abdul Shukkur, Alamgir Hossain alias Bulu, Mizanur Rahman, and Md Shahidullah. Each was also fined Tk 20,000.

The four sentenced to life imprisonment are Abdul Majid, Fatema Khatun, Rasheda, and Laila Begum.

According to the prosecution, the convicts abducted 10-year-old Mohammad Hasan Shakil and his 8-year-old brother Mohammad Hossain Kajal—sons of Mohammad Forkan of Garjania in Ramu upazila—on January 17, 2016. They later demanded Tk 4 lakh in ransom from the family.

When the ransom was not paid, the children were murdered and their bodies dumped in a canal. Police recovered the bodies on January 20, three days after the abduction.

Following the incident, a case was filed with Ramu Police Station.
