Fifteen army officers — accused in a case involving killings during the July uprising and two cases of enforced disappearance — have been taken to a sub-jail inside the cantonment, defense counsel Barrister M Sarwar Hossain said today. The prison authorities will now review the sub-jail arrangements, the defense lawyer said.

Earlier, the officers, who were in the custody of the Bangladesh Army, were brought to the tribunal around 7:00am and produced before the ICT-1 amid tight security.

Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Rapid Action Battalion (Rab), and police were deployed in and around the court premises. They were transported in a green, air-conditioned special prison van.

The officers are: Maj Gen Sheikh Md Sarwar Hossen; Brigadier Generals Md Jahangir Alam, Tofayel Mostofa Sarwar, Md Qamrul Hasan, Md Mahbub Alam, Md Mahbubur Rahman Siddique and Ahmed Tanvir Majahar Siddique; Colonels Anowar Latif Khan, AKM Azad, Abdullah Al Momen and Md Sarwar Bin Kashem; Lieutenant Colonels Md Moshiur Rahman Jewel, Saiful Islam Sumon and Mohammad Redowanul Islam; and Major Rafat Bin Alam Moon.

ICT sends 15 army officers to jail

Fifteen serving military officers who were in the custody of the Bangladesh Army were taken to the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) this morning in connection with two enforced disappearance cases and a murder case in Dhaka’s Rampura, which is linked to the July uprising.

After today’s hearing, the tribunal ordered that all 15 officers be sent to jail, Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam told reporters after the proceedings.

He added that the government and jail authorities would decide in which facility the officers would be placed.

The accused were brought to the tribunal premises around 7:00am amid tight security. Members of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Rapid Action Battalion (Rab), and police were deployed in and around the court area. The officers were transported in a green prison van.

Earlier, on October 8, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 issued arrest warrants against 28 accused in the cases. Among them, 25 are serving and retired army officers.

The tribunal issued the warrants after taking cognisance of formal charges submitted by the prosecution. It directed the inspector general of police to execute the warrants and sent copies to the relevant authorities of the accused officers. The tribunal also fixed today for submission of a compliance report on the execution of the warrants.

In both enforced disappearance cases, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Maj Gen (retd) Tarique Ahmed Siddique, who served as defence and security adviser to the premier, are also accused.Fifteen serving military officers who were in custody of Bangladesh Army were taken to International Crimes Tribunal this morning in connection with two enforced disappearance cases.
