Interim govt’s responsibility is to remain neutral, Yunus says

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus discussed the government’s preparations for the upcoming national election, scheduled for February, with the BNP top brass.

“Our responsibility is to remain neutral. The election is a major national event. We will appoint only those capable of maintaining peace and discipline. This will remain under my direct oversight. We will do everything necessary to ensure a peaceful and impartial election,” Yunus assured the BNP leaders at the meeting, according to a press release issued by his press wing.

The BNP delegation included Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Standing Committee members Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury and Salahuddin Ahmed.

On behalf of the government, Planning Adviser Wahiduddin Mahmud, Law Adviser Asif Nazrul, and Industries and Housing and Public Works Adviser Adilur Rahman Khan attended the meeting, said the CA’s press wing.

During the meeting at the state guest house Jamuna, the BNP leaders urged the chief adviser to ensure that no controversial officials — particularly those who had served in election duties during the authoritarian Awami League regime — are given any responsibility in the upcoming election.

They also called on the chief adviser to maintain strict neutrality in administrative reshuffles ahead of the polls.

The chief adviser in turn told the BNP delegation that, as the adviser in charge of the public administration ministry, all administrative changes before the election will be made directly under his supervision.

The BNP leaders also shared several observations with the chief adviser regarding the recruitment and transfer process within the police.

They congratulated the government for involving political leaders in the UN General Assembly and for the successful implementation of the July National Charter 2025.

At the same time, the BNP delegation expressed deep concern over recent fire incidents at several facilities across the country and urged the government to investigate whether there was any act of sabotage behind them.

As part of the ongoing political dialogue, the chief adviser is scheduled to meet a delegation of Jamaat-e-Islami tomorrow.
